Athlete Spotlight: JED EDEN

Jed Eden in an 'activated' nutshell

Hi I’m Jed. I'm New Plymouth local and I love participating in Triathlon, particularly long course racing with a focus on half and full Ironman distance. I lead a busy life having a time demanding job, family with 2 young girls, and a hobby that is very time consuming. Getting the balance right along with adequate sleep and nutrition is a delicate balance, which my wife may say I get wrong from time to time.

What does a typical day entail?

A typical day for me starts with a 5.20am wake up then straight into my morning training session. I am usually at my desk for work by 7am. At lunch time I fit in my second training session of the day. 5.00pm finish work and head home to see my wife and 2 daughters. Once the girls are in bed i spend some time with my wife and get ready for the next day. Sleep and repeat. I love every day.

What are 3 foods you can't live without?

Muggins - an awesome gluten and dairy free energy snack when your on the go - Made up of almond meal, desiccated coconut, cacao, baking powder, rice milk and raspberries

Eggs

Dark chocolate

What are some of your go to snacks for pre and post training?

Pre training a banana or Clifbar is my usual

Post training normally a Clean protein shake, scrambled eggs and gluten free toast with peanut butter (Chantals organic is my favourite)

What are some of your tips for people starting out on their healthy journey?

Just keep going. I started this at 105kg and know how hard it can be but stick to it as its consistency that will get you to your goals. Also remember you can’t out exercise a bad diet!

What would be your number one tip for Vitality?

Nutrition is key to peak performance. Natural ability will only get you so far. I competed at Ironman for 4 years but could not break through to the front of the pack so to speak. Being forced to change my diet when my kids with diagnosed with dairy and gluten allergies; seemed to be the missing ingredient that allowed me to steadily improve enough to recently finish 3rd in my age group in Ironman New Zealand; plus taking over 30 minutes off my previous best time. This achievement has qualified me for the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii which I will compete in later this year. The change to a wholefood based diet free from dairy and gluten has also helped with recovery, energy, and general well-being.

Here's testament to what can be achieved when you dream big, train hard, sleep and eat well!

To help support Jed to reach the Ironman World Chamionships in Kona, Hawaii you can go the Give a little fund at https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/jededenkona. Every little bit helps.

Go Jed, you are going to do New Zealand proud!
