Just what is Normal?

Now I know your thinking where on earth is she going with this....

I'm using this rhyme as a health analogy.

Put yourself in Humpty's shoes. Would you rather:

a. Have someone talk you down from the wall or

b. Have all the kings horses and all the kings come and try fix you.

Prevention is better than cure in every case and the best way to do that is to listen to the whispering's and symptoms your body is giving and do something about it before it is screaming at you.....

We are all individual with unique sets of genetic makeup and are exposed to many factors that influence how our body systems operate.

Below are a few of the most commonly discussed questions in consultations and what insight they provide into your health and how your body is functioning.

Listen, check and take notice...

What is a normal menstruation cycle?

A period is considered a downright pain by most of the female population but did you know that it can be a report card into what is going on inside your body?

Ayurvedic medicine promotes a healthy menstrual cycle as one that occurs once a month, is pain-free, bloat-free, is bright red with no clots or mucous, lasts 4-5days and no mood-swings or irritability is involved in the lead up or during. Variations from the norm are the body’s way of showing imbalances that stem from nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances or organ dysfunction.

Doesn't everyone crave sugar?

Many people do but the answer is No and you shouldn't if everything is in balance. Craving sugar can be linked to a range of issues. The common ones include the bacteria in your gut are out of balance favouring the unhelpful guys, you have imbalanced blood sugar levels, you are not eating enough protein and fats or are not getting enough sleep. If its specifically chocolate craving it can be related to magnesium deficiency

How much sleep is normal?

Some people function better on less sleep than others but a general rule of thumb is 8 hours of quality sleep per night.

To ensure you get quality sleep aim to get in sync with your natural body clock. This means wind down by 9pm and be in bed by 9.45 with lights out as a natural rise in cortisol at 10pm can give you a surge in energy. Aim to rise with the sun so enjoy a bit more of a sleep in during the winter. How often should I urinate?

The normal frequency is 6 – 7 times in a 24 hour period. This can be slightly more or less depending on how much fluid you drink and the types of fluid that you consume. If you are drinking a lot of fluids or take medication that have a diuretic effect you may go more. When you urinate it should be pale-coloured and there should be no pain when passing.

How often should I be having a bowel movement?

When it comes to the excretion topic, it is clearly unfavourable for most of us above the age of five. Talking about poop will guarantee nervous laughter, and wisecracks about "too much info." However this needs to be discussed especially in house with your children as bowel emissions provide important health information that deserves attention, regardless of the "gross factor."

Here are the basics: You should be having a brown, well-formed bowel motion (type 4 is ideal) 1-3 times a day.
